Medication such as tetracycline antibiotics can cause deep staining on your teeth. Other cosmetic treatments such as porcelain veneers can easily disguise intrinsic stains and may be a great alternative if your tooth discolouration cannot be addressed with a teeth whitening treatment.
Extrinsic stains are typically caused by the tannic acid found in cola, coffee, tea and soy sauce. Vibrant fruit like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and tomato sauces also cause superficial stains. The nicotine in tobacco causes yellowing of your teeth.
For many people the whiteness of their teeth has decreased naturally with age. Good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings can help to delay the onset of discoloured teeth, but once the pigments from food, beverages and tobacco have been absorbed, the discolouration can only be removed with a teeth whitening treatment.
Most people can achieve a dramatically brighter smile with a Pola teeth whitening treatment at Bright Dental Group. One chairside teeth whitening treatment session is typically enough to achieve a noticeably whiter smile that lasts!
Types of stains
It’s important for you to know the different kinds of stains that can occur, if you’ve ever wondered how does teeth whitening work? Stains can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic stains from fluorosis or medication can be challenging to remove.
Fluorosis is a condition that is caused by overexposure to fluoride when the teeth are developing. It causes streaks on your teeth.
How does teeth whitening work?

Chairside teeth whitening
Chairside teeth whitening is a convenient and quick professional treatment. At Bright Dental Group we use Pola, a chemically activated in-chair whitening treatment designed to minimise sensitivity and maximise bleaching efficiency.
Pola contains a powerful 37.5% hydrogen peroxide gel as well as potassium nitrate and fluoride to help reduce sensitivity and improve overall teeth health. Chairside teeth whitening is ideal for patients with a hypersensitive gag reflex because the gel is applied directly to the teeth.
Once a rubber dam gum has been placed to protect your gums and soft tissue, your dentist applies hydrogen peroxide gel in three 8-minute sessions to your teeth. The pH neutral gel breaks down the surface stains on your teeth without damaging the tooth enamel. This process takes approximately 30 minutes for results that are up to several shades brighter.

Take-home kit
A dentist-prescribed take-home teeth whitening kit is an excellent choice if you prefer to brighten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. You will be fitted with custom bleaching trays, to protect your gums and provide even bleaching results. You will also receive a bleaching gel. You simply place some gel in the tray before wearing for the recommended period.
Depending on the strength of gel we recommend for your unique smile, you can wear your bleaching trays for 30-90 minutes during the day or while you sleep. You should see noticeable results within 2 weeks.
Which is better? Chairside or take-home?
Both teeth whitening systems produce the same outcome. The preferred option depends on your needs, lifestyle, the type of stain, diet and oral self-care habits.
