Wisdom teeth surgery is a common dental procedure used to remove teeth that are problematic or could create future problems for your teeth and gums.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems?
As the last teeth to emerge around the age of 17-21, there is often insufficient space in the jawbone to accommodate these extra molars. When they cannot erupt through the gum line properly, this is known as impacted wisdom teeth.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a host of oral health complications including:
- Gingivitis due to a build-up of plaque along the gumline
- Pericoronitis if food and bacteria become trapped under a flap of gum tissue
- Crowding as adjacent teeth are pushed closer together to make space for emerging wisdom teeth
- Misalignment if the wisdom tooth emerges at an angle pushing the surrounding teeth out of position
- Severe tooth decay due to an inability to perform adequate oral hygiene around the wisdom tooth
Many of these secondary issues require extensive and costly treatments to remedy. A simple tooth extraction improves your oral health and reduces the need for teeth straightening and gum disease treatment.
Do I Need Wisdom Teeth Surgery?
For the few lucky people whose wisdom teeth are congenitally absent or emerge correctly, wisdom teeth surgery is unnecessary.
However, for the majority of the population, tooth extraction can be an effective preventative measure against the complications of impacted wisdom teeth.
What is the Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure?
The type of wisdom teeth surgery required depends on the condition and position of your wisdom teeth.
Before undergoing surgery, your dentist performs diagnostic tests to create a personalised treatment plan. At Bright Dental Group, we use the latest CBCT X-Ray technology to create clear images of your teeth and jaw, so we can monitor the development of your wisdom teeth and extract them as quickly and safely as possible.
-
Simple Extraction
Most wisdom tooth extractions are straightforward and can be performed within a few minutes chairside in our dental practice. A simple extraction is used for visible, fully or partially erupted wisdom teeth.
The dentist begins by numbing the area around the wisdom tooth with a local anaesthetic. They then widen the tooth socket using a dental lifter. Forceps are then used to rock the wisdom tooth back and forth in the socket before being removed.

Complex Extraction
If your wisdom tooth is severely impacted or positioned close to a nerve, you may need a complex extraction. This surgery is performed under general anesthetic.
In many cases, the dentist makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth. The wisdom tooth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. After the tooth is removed, the area is sutured.
